 Smuggler's Hideout Bourbon Barrel Ale- About an hours drive north of our store is a notorious lake lodge for Chicago gangsters during prohibition. It was Capone's retreat when the Bourbon running got a little hot in Chicago. The boat house was used to store whiskey brought down by sea plane from Canada. This beer pays hommage to those wild times in the north woods. Bourbon barrel aging picks up not only the caramel and vanilla notes from the oak but also a bit of the bourbon. Instead of having to make a whole barrel this kit uses oak chips to accomplish the same complexity of flavors. An intensely complex beer, a perfect compliment to a venison roast.
